What is Counselling and/or Therapy?

Counselling is a type of talking therapy that allows a person to talk about their problems and feelings in a confidential and dependable environment. A counselor is trained to listen with empathy.

Therapy is also known as psychotherapy. It is a process often conducted by a Psychologist to resolve or deal with a problematic behaviour that affects individual’s functioning. It can be conducted with teenagers or adolescents as well as with adults.

The aims of counselling are:

  • To improve the qualify life of a client by helping him/her to manage problems, make life enhancing changes and cope with all kinds of problems that will arise in the future.
  • To assist clients to review their problems and the options or choices they have for dealing with these problems (Egan, 1998).
